Crystal Palace are weighing up a move for AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini, who has fallen out of favour in the Italian capital and is now firmly on the market.

According to Marco Giordano and Calciomercato, Roma are open to offloading their 29-year-old captain this summer, and Palace manager Oliver Glasner is keen on adding a proven leader to his evolving squad.

Why Roma Are Willing to Let Pellegrini Leave

Once dubbed the heir to Francesco Totti — albeit an unfair comparison — Pellegrini rose to become Roma’s captain at just 25. But over the past two seasons, his influence has faded significantly.

Under new boss Gian Piero Gasperini, Pellegrini has not featured in a single pre-season match. Roma are also under pressure to reduce their wage bill, and the midfielder’s €6 million-per-year salary (reportedly net) is proving to be a burden.

Glasner’s Palace Project Could Appeal to Pellegrini

Since replacing Roy Hodgson, Oliver Glasner has pushed Crystal Palace towards a more progressive, European-style system. The arrival of Matheus França, Adam Wharton’s rise, and Palace’s retention of key assets have shown ambition.

Adding Pellegrini — a technical midfielder with Champions League and Serie A experience — would bring added composure and leadership, especially in high-pressure moments.

Palace are believed to be in a stronger financial position than most Serie A clubs, making them one of the few sides capable of absorbing Pellegrini’s wages — or negotiating a deal to reduce them.

2022/23 AS Roma 38 7 8

Analyst Verdict: Smart Gamble for Palace?

While Pellegrini’s recent form has dipped, his technical ability, set-piece quality, and leadership are undoubted. For a Palace side looking to climb from mid-table to European contention, this could be a smart, experience-based addition — if the wage terms can be managed.

What’s Next?

Roma are expected to continue offering Pellegrini to Premier League clubs as they try to move his salary off the books.

Crystal Palace will now weigh the cost-benefit equation — balancing Glasner’s desire for experience with the player’s recent decline in form.

If Palace move quickly, a deal could be agreed before rival suitors like Bournemouth step up their interest.
