Jamie Carragher has questioned Liverpool's recruitment strategy after teenagers Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha impressed during Wednesday's 3-2 Champions League defeat to Fenerbahce.

The former defender believes the performances of Liverpool's youngsters have exposed concerns about expensive signings and established players under Andoni Iraola.

The defeat also left Liverpool with a worrying defensive record: ten goals conceded in four European matches.

Carragher questions Liverpool spending as Ngumoha impresses

Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher argued that Liverpool's investment has not produced the squad quality or balance expected.

"The squad Liverpool have got is very expensive but not as good as it should be and not as balanced as it should be," he said.

Carragher singled out Ngumoha and Nyoni, believing both outperformed more established teammates against Fenerbahce and previously against Chelsea.

His criticism centred on Bradley Barcola, Liverpool's reported £120million signing, alongside the significant contracts awarded to Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai.

The concern is not simply that young players are earning opportunities, but that they are outperforming expensive alternatives.

Carragher suggested Liverpool's recruitment decision-makers must take responsibility for that imbalance.

Trey Nyoni scores but Liverpool collapse in Turkey

Nyoni opened the scoring in the 25th minute, becoming Liverpool's second-youngest Champions League goalscorer at 19 years and 127 days.

Mason Greenwood equalised four minutes later before substitute Alexander Isak restored Liverpool's lead in the 69th minute.

However, Archie Brown levelled in the 73rd minute and Vedat Muriqi headed home the winner six minutes later.

All three Fenerbahce goals followed set-piece situations, highlighting Liverpool's defensive organisation problems.

According to Opta, Liverpool have now conceded at least three goals in three consecutive European matches for the first time.

Nyoni admits Liverpool must learn important lesson

Despite his historic goal, Nyoni was disappointed by the team's inability to protect either lead.

"The next step for us as a team is to be more consistent over the 90 and see out wins," he explained.

The midfielder also acknowledged that lapses in concentration had proved costly.

For Iraola, the challenge extends beyond selection decisions to improving Liverpool's defensive organisation.
