Coventry City manager Frank Lampard believes his side can continue improving after recovering from a disastrous start to their first Premier League campaign in 25 years.

The Sky Blues lost their opening four league matches without scoring but have since won three of five, climbing to 16th place with nine points.

Victory at Everton on Friday would take Coventry to 12 points after ten games and could lift them as high as 11th, depending on other results.

"I would like to think there is a higher ceiling," Lampard said ahead of facing his former club.

Lampard's tactical changes transform Coventry

Coventry's recovery has coincided with a more pragmatic and adaptable approach from Lampard.

After a difficult start, including a 5-0 defeat against Brighton, the former Chelsea midfielder adjusted his system to counter Nottingham Forest's three-man defence.

Coventry secured a 1-0 victory at the City Ground and subsequently recorded impressive wins against Newcastle United and Sunderland.

The tactical flexibility was particularly evident during last weekend's 3-1 victory over Sunderland, when Coventry had just 42.6% possession.

An analysis by the Coventry Telegraph found that the Sky Blues played 147 forward passes against Sunderland, compared with 123 during their previous defeat to Fulham, despite attempting fewer passes overall.

That more direct approach contrasted with the earlier 1-0 defeat to Hull City, when Coventry enjoyed 68.5% possession without finding a breakthrough.

"We know we have a big fight so every small percentage in our set-up if we feel that way we will do it," Lampard explained.

Jack Rudoni emerges as key Premier League performer

Jack Rudoni has been one of Coventry's most productive players, scoring four goals in ten appearances across all competitions.

Three have come in the Premier League, with another in the Carabao Cup.

Lampard has also shown a willingness to make difficult selection decisions, including leaving promotion-winning captain Matt Grimes on the bench.

However, Coventry's results remain stronger than their underlying attacking performances.

The Sky Blues have generated approximately 8.3 expected goals in nine Premier League matches, the lowest total in the division.

That figure highlights the need to create better opportunities rather than relying on clinical finishing and defensive resilience.

Coventry manager warns against complacency

Lampard, who managed Everton between January 2022 and January 2023, returns to face his former club at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

"Relaxation and complacency is the biggest danger in this game," he warned.

A victory would take Coventry to 12 points after ten matches. According to The Guardian, all 21 Premier League teams to reach that total at the same stage over the previous decade ultimately avoided relegation.

Nevertheless, Lampard's side remain vulnerable, particularly given their limited chance creation and the challenges of adapting to top-flight football.

Key Points

  • Coventry have won three of their last five Premier League matches.
  • Lampard's tactical adjustments have helped reverse their poor start.
  • Rudoni has scored four goals across all competitions.
  • Coventry still have the league's lowest expected goals total.
  • Victory at Everton would take the Sky Blues to 12 points.

What's Next?

Coventry visit Everton on Friday, 6 November, looking to extend their recovery before upcoming fixtures against Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Ipswich Town.

Lampard will aim to maintain his team's tactical flexibility while improving their attacking output and avoiding the complacency he has warned against.
