Liverpool one signature away from Joel Ordóñez as Chelsea drop out

Liverpool are reportedly closing in on the signing of Club Brugge defender Joel Ordóñez, with the Ecuadorian described as being “one signature away” from completing a move to Anfield after Chelsea dropped out of the race.

According to reports originating from Ecuador, Liverpool now have a clear path to secure the 21-year-old centre-back, having moved ahead of several European rivals in recent weeks. Club Brugge are understood to be holding out for a fee in excess of €40 million if the deal is to be completed during the January transfer window.

Earlier this week, Bolavip reported that Liverpool were best placed to land Ordóñez after Chelsea cooled their interest. Ecuadorian outlet Diario Expreso has since reinforced that claim, stating the defender is “set to join Liverpool with a lucrative contract”.

The report suggests Liverpool’s long-term sporting project was decisive in convincing Ordóñez and his representatives, outweighing approaches from Chelsea and Inter Milan. The Reds are said to value both his age profile and defensive skillset as part of their broader recruitment strategy.

Diario Expreso claims Liverpool managing director Michael Edwards is personally overseeing negotiations with Club Brugge. The two clubs are believed to have agreed the main framework of the transfer, with only final details left to resolve.

While the exact fee has not been disclosed, Brugge’s valuation is expected to exceed €40m, reflecting Ordóñez’s importance and contract status. The defender is described as being “details away” from becoming a Liverpool player, suggesting talks are at an advanced stage rather than exploratory.

The Ecuadorian report adds that Ordóñez is set to earn around $7m per year, excluding bonuses, should the move be finalised. While that figure may not be considered excessive by Premier League standards, it is described as “lucrative” within the context of Ecuadorian football and underlines the scale of the step up.
