Liverpool’s €35m Lucca Brughmans deal hailed as ‘brilliant’ transfer

Liverpool’s €35million move for Genk goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans has been hailed as a deal that works perfectly for everyone involved, with Johan Boskamp tipping the teenager to become Belgium’s future number one.

The Reds have completed the signing of the highly-rated 18-year-old but have agreed to leave him at Genk on loan for the remainder of the season.

That arrangement allows Brughmans to continue playing regularly rather than immediately entering a crowded goalkeeping department at Anfield.

Boskamp believes Genk handled negotiations exceptionally well, securing a major transfer fee while retaining their goalkeeper for another season.

“It’s a good thing. I think KRC Genk negotiated this brilliantly. They’re cashing in €35m and get to keep using him for another year,” Boskamp said.

For Brughmans, remaining in Belgium could prove equally important.

“This is the best solution for Brughmans himself, too. At this age, he simply needs to play. That would have been difficult at Liverpool.”

Rather than sitting behind Liverpool’s established goalkeepers, the teenager can continue his development with regular first-team football at Genk.

Brughmans’ eventual place at Liverpool remains unclear because the Reds already have significant options in the position.

Alisson is expected to remain at Anfield for another season, while Liverpool have also invested heavily in Giorgi Mamardashvili as a potential long-term successor.

The decision to spend another €35m on Brughmans therefore creates an intriguing situation for the future.

Liverpool do not need to make that decision immediately, though. Keeping Brughmans at Genk gives the club another season to assess his development before determining how he fits into their plans.

Boskamp has little doubt about the youngster’s potential and believes Liverpool have secured one of Belgium’s biggest talents.

“Perhaps the greatest Belgian goalkeeping talent since Thibaut Courtois. He has everything: height, speed, and good footwork,” he said.

That comparison places significant expectations on Brughmans, but Boskamp believes the €35m investment will eventually prove worthwhile.

“€35m is a lot of money, but I do think Liverpool has made a good deal. I genuinely believe Brughmans will become the national team’s future goalkeeper.”

Liverpool’s decision to immediately loan Brughmans back to Genk means his development does not need to be disrupted by the transfer.

He can continue playing in familiar surroundings while knowing his long-term future has already been secured at Anfield.

Genk receive a substantial fee without immediately losing their goalkeeper, Brughmans retains regular football and Liverpool secure a highly-rated prospect before his value potentially rises further.

For Boskamp, that makes it a rare transfer where all three parties can be satisfied with the outcome.

Brughmans will spend the remainder of the season at Genk, where regular first-team football should remain the priority for his development.

Liverpool can monitor his progress from Anfield before deciding how to integrate him next season, particularly with Alisson and Mamardashvili already competing for their places in the club’s long-term goalkeeping plans.

If Brughmans continues developing as Boskamp expects, Liverpool could soon face an important decision over which goalkeeper they ultimately want to build around.
