Gabriel Gudmundsson has expressed his relief and delight after making his first start of the season for Leeds United in their draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Swedish defender has endured an injury-hit beginning to the campaign but was finally restored to the starting XI and completed the full 90 minutes as Leeds secured a point away from home.
Jayden Bogle gave Daniel Farke’s side the lead in the first half before Brighton responded after the break to earn a share of the points.
Gudmundsson had been ‘waiting’ for Leeds return
After spending time on the sidelines, Gudmundsson made no attempt to hide how much he had been looking forward to returning.
“I have been waiting for this,” he said after the final whistle.
“Of course, it has been a tough period but again just a credit to the physio team that helped me here today very prepared.”
Returning directly to the starting lineup and completing the entire match represented an important step for Gudmundsson after his difficult start to the season.
Leeds pleased with Brighton point
Gudmundsson was also satisfied with Leeds’ performance and believes a point at Brighton represents a positive result.
“Overall very happy with the point here,” he said. “I think Brighton, especially, is a very, very difficult place to come to.”
Leeds had opportunities to take more from the game, but Gudmundsson was particularly impressed by the resilience his teammates showed after the interval.
“I think we had really good two or three chances. We showed really good resilience today and fought very well in the second half.”
After struggling on their previous visit to Brighton, the defender believes the latest performance showed Leeds are moving in the right direction.
Gudmundsson praises Leeds medical staff
The 27-year-old was particularly grateful to Leeds’ medical and physiotherapy staff for helping him get back onto the pitch.
Gudmundsson admitted completing 90 minutes immediately after returning was demanding but reported no immediate problems following the game.
“Straight into the 90 minutes, of course, I am just so happy that my body feels okay,” he explained.
“Probably will feel it tomorrow – that is another story!”
He again highlighted the work done behind the scenes at Thorp Arch during his rehabilitation.
“I got really good help from the medical team and the physios. Hopefully it is just going to be better and better now.”
Defender focused on rebuilding rhythm
Gudmundsson’s immediate challenge will now be maintaining his fitness and gradually rediscovering his match rhythm.
Rather than looking too far ahead after one appearance, the Sweden international wants to manage his body carefully over the coming weeks.
“I just need to stay calm and focus on the weeks coming up,” he said.
“Need to get into the rhythm again but as I said, it felt good today.”
After waiting for his opportunity following a frustrating injury spell, completing a full Premier League match provides Gudmundsson with an encouraging platform to build from.
