Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz has received glowing praise from Germany teammate Philipp Treu, who admitted he was stunned by the 23-year-old's technical ability during the latest international break.
The SC Freiburg defender trained alongside Wirtz after earning a place in Jürgen Klopp's Germany squad, describing the Liverpool playmaker's decision-making and close control as exceptional.
His comments come at a time when Wirtz continues to face scrutiny over his performances at Anfield following his expensive move from Bayer Leverkusen.
Germany defender amazed by Wirtz in training
Speaking to German newspaper Bild, Treu discussed his experience of training with established internationals, including Bayern Munich captain Joshua Kimmich.
However, it was Wirtz who made a particularly strong impression.
"Standing on the training pitch with Florian Wirtz for the first time and seeing what he's capable of was impressive," Treu said.
The 25-year-old explained that Wirtz's ability to escape pressure and make the correct decisions separates him from other players.
"When he gets going, it sometimes looks as though he's playing against an U19 side," he added.
"His technique in tight spaces is exceptional."
Treu also recalled a possession exercise in which he felt Wirtz was almost impossible to dispossess.
Wirtz continues to face Liverpool criticism
Liverpool signed Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2025 in a deal worth approximately €125 million plus bonuses.
The Germany international registered seven goals and 10 assists during his debut season, but questions remained over whether his performances justified the significant transfer fee.
He has recorded three assists so far this season, including an important contribution against Brentford at the weekend.
Despite flashes of his creativity, Wirtz has faced criticism from supporters and sections of the German media.
Speculation about a possible move to Bayern Munich has also emerged, although club president Herbert Hainer recently ruled out signing him.
