Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has revealed that the club previously informed him they were not planning to extend his contract, although he remains determined to stay at Anfield.
The 27-year-old's current agreement expires in June 2028, leaving uncertainty over his long-term future.
However, the Argentina international believes recent changes behind the scenes could lead Liverpool to reconsider their position.
Mac Allister reveals Liverpool contract disappointment
Speaking to Argentine journalist Gastón Edul, Mac Allister explained that Liverpool communicated their intentions during the previous season.
"Last season I was told that the club's idea was not to renew it, at least for now," he revealed.
"Obviously, that was a painful, unpleasant situation."
Despite his disappointment, the midfielder insisted that remaining at Liverpool is his preferred outcome.
He highlighted the affection he receives from supporters and described winning the Premier League with the club as a particularly special achievement.
Mac Allister previously expressed frustration about his contract situation in September, but has continued to emphasise his commitment to Liverpool.
Szoboszlai and Gravenberch received new deals
Mac Allister pointed to teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, who were previously in similar contractual situations.
Both subsequently signed extensions, with Szoboszlai committing until 2031 and Gravenberch until 2032.
"I don't judge the decision they made. I was just expressing my own emotions and feelings," Mac Allister explained.
The midfielder acknowledged that clubs must consider financial implications when deciding whether to renew contracts.
He also recognised that Liverpool's decision could change before his current agreement expires.
Liverpool changes offer fresh hope
Mac Allister believes changes involving Liverpool's manager, sporting director and investment structure could create an opportunity for fresh discussions.
The World Cup winner remains optimistic about his future despite the lack of a confirmed contract offer.
He has also discussed the possibility of eventually returning to Argentina, although his immediate priority remains Liverpool.
