Julio Baptista reflects on Arsenal loan and Iconic Four-Goal night at Anfield

Julio Baptista has spoken with great affection about his time at Arsenal, recalling how his one-season loan under Arsène Wenger shaped him both as a player and a person. The Brazilian spent the 2006/07 campaign at the Emirates after joining from Real Madrid, and despite staying only a year, his impact remains fondly remembered by supporters.

“I can’t help but remember the great match we played at Anfield against Liverpool,” he said. “A thrilling match in which I scored four goals and even missed a penalty!”

It wasn’t just the goals that made the night unforgettable. Baptista revealed he received applause from Liverpool supporters as he left the pitch — something that left a lasting emotional impression.

“It was incredible. It was the first time I left a stadium being applauded by rival fans; that experience undoubtedly left a profound mark on me.”

That moment symbolised the respect he earned during his spell, despite being at Arsenal for only a short time.

Baptista also reserved special admiration for Arsène Wenger, praising the Frenchman’s ability to connect with players and his skill in understanding what they needed both mentally and emotionally.

“Wenger has always given me nothing but good advice,” he said. “He has a special sensitivity and truly understands what’s going on inside a player. A great manager and an even better person.”

Wenger’s man-management has long been regarded as one of his strongest qualities, and Baptista’s comments reinforce how powerful that influence was on players who passed through his squads, even briefly.

While Baptista never played more than 100 matches for any club, he enjoyed memorable spells across Europe. After returning to Real Madrid following his Arsenal loan, he eventually moved to AS Roma, where he made 77 appearances — one of the most stable and productive periods of his career.
