Liverpool urged to sign John Stones as Chelsea and Arsenal monitor free agent

Liverpool have been urged to move for free-agent defender John Stones, despite growing interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Arsenal.

While Chelsea and Arsenal are both assessing a potential move, former Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes Liverpool should seize the opportunity to strengthen their defence ahead of the new season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, MacAnthony said:

"I'd love Liverpool to sign him."

He also suggested the financial demands of a deal would represent excellent value given Stones' quality and experience.

Liverpool's need for defensive reinforcements has increased following Ibrahima Konaté's departure to Real Madrid.

The Reds now have a limited number of senior centre-backs, with youngsters Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoniboth returning from lengthy injury absences.

Although both are expected to be available for the new campaign, adding an experienced international defender would provide greater depth and leadership.

As a free agent, Stones represents a low-risk opportunity for clubs seeking proven Premier League quality.
