John Stones offered to Inter on free transfer amid Chalobah race

John Stones has reportedly been offered to Inter as the Serie A champions consider alternatives to Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.

According to reports in Italy, including information attributed to transfer journalist Matteo Moretto, representatives of the England international have again presented Stones as a possible option for Inter. The 32-year-old is now a free agent following the expiry of his Manchester City contract.

Inter are expected to add two central defenders this summer after a major reshaping of their back line. Manuel Akanji has been retained, but the departures of Francesco Acerbi, Stefan de Vrij and Matteo Darmian have left the club needing further reinforcements.

Stones represents a significantly different deal from Chalobah. While Chelsea are demanding around €35 million for their defender, the former Manchester City centre-back would arrive without a transfer fee.

The financial calculation would still be complicated by wages. Stones earned a salary beyond the usual limits of Serie A's leading clubs during his time at Manchester City, although reports suggest he is prepared to accept reduced terms for the next stage of his career.

The England defender is believed to be seeking a two-year contract with an option for a further season. Juventus and Napoli have also reportedly been made aware of his availability.

Inter, however, have not yet made a decisive move. Stones struggled with muscular injuries during his final season in Manchester, and his recent fitness record is understood to be one of the factors being assessed before any formal approach.

Inter's interest in Stones comes as the club continue to evaluate a move for Chalobah, who is also wanted by Como.

Chelsea are reportedly seeking between €35 million and €40 million for the 27-year-old. Como are expected to return with an improved proposal worth around €30 million plus €5 million in bonuses, while Inter have yet to submit an official bid.

Chalobah is believed to favour a move to Inter, but the absence of a formal offer leaves the situation open. That makes Stones an intriguing alternative: older and carrying greater fitness concerns, but available without a transfer fee and with extensive Champions League and Premier League experience.

No decision on Stones is expected immediately. The defender is currently focused on England's World Cup campaign and is likely to determine his club future after the tournament.

Inter must meanwhile decide whether to invest heavily in Chalobah or explore a lower-cost deal for Stones. Much will depend on the financial terms involved and the club's assessment of Stones' physical condition before negotiations can advance.
