Chelsea have reportedly emerged as JJ Gabriel’s preferred destination if the Manchester United wonderkid decides to remain in England.

Gabriel formally asked United to cancel his academy registration last week, although the club are continuing efforts to convince the highly-rated 15-year-old to stay. His future could become clearer when he turns 16 on October 6, with Real Madrid and Barcelona also stepping up their interest.

According to TEAMtalk, virtually every major English club has presented its plans to Gabriel, but Chelsea are currently considered his most attractive Premier League option.

Chelsea emerge as Gabriel’s preferred English choice

Talks between Gabriel and Chelsea are reported to have taken place, although a move to Spain is currently presented as a stronger possibility than remaining in England.

Gabriel’s Irish passport could potentially provide a route to an EU club once he turns 16, although any transfer would still require FIFA approval.

Real Madrid and Barcelona can also offer a pathway through their reserve structures towards senior football, something that could appeal to a player whose concerns at United have centred on his route towards first-team opportunities.

United, however, have not given up on changing his mind.

The teenager has already trained with Michael Carrick’s first team, but his limited involvement during pre-season and absence from United’s Champions League squad against Sabah contributed to growing uncertainty over his future.

Manchester United identify Mezian Mesloub

While retaining Gabriel remains the priority, United are reportedly preparing for the possibility of losing him.

TEAMtalk claims Lens prospect Mezian Mesloub has emerged as one potential alternative following extensive scouting work.

The 16-year-old has already made his senior Lens debut and scored just 11 seconds into his professional bow against Nantes last season. His technical ability and creativity have also attracted attention from Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

There is one significant obstacle for United. Post-Brexit regulations mean Mesloub could not move to an English club until he turns 18.

United therefore face two separate challenges: persuading Gabriel that Old Trafford remains the right place for his development while positioning themselves for another elite young talent who cannot immediately arrive in England.

Key points

  • JJ Gabriel reportedly prefers Chelsea if he remains in England.
  • Real Madrid and Barcelona are also pushing to sign the Manchester United youngster.
  • United are still attempting to convince Gabriel to stay at Old Trafford.
  • Lens teenager Mezian Mesloub has emerged as a potential alternative.
  • Mesloub cannot join an English club until he turns 18 due to post-Brexit regulations.

What’s next?

Gabriel turns 16 on October 6, which could prove an important point in determining his next move as United, Chelsea and leading Spanish clubs compete for his future.

Manchester United will continue trying to retain him, but their work on Mesloub suggests they are also preparing recruitment options should Gabriel ultimately decide to leave.
