Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has vowed to fight for his place in the France squad after missing out on Zinedine Zidane's first international selection.
The 29-year-old has barely featured for Palace this season because of a hamstring injury, but remains determined to earn a recall for November's international fixtures.
Mateta admits the opportunity to represent France under Zidane would fulfil another major ambition in his career.
Mateta determined to earn France recall
Speaking to RMC Sport, Mateta insisted his international career is far from finished despite being overlooked during the latest international break.
“I know it’s not over. I’m going to do everything I can to get back into the squad,” he said.
Zidane replaced Didier Deschamps following the World Cup, ending the former France manager's 14-year tenure.
Mateta, who made his senior international debut in October 2025, has scored twice in seven appearances for his country.
“Playing for Zidane? That would be a dream; he’s one of the best players in the history of the French national team.”
The striker added that he would do everything possible to earn selection in November.
Crystal Palace injury setback threatens international hopes
Mateta's ambitions depend heavily on his recovery from a hamstring injury.
He has made just one appearance for Crystal Palace this season, starting the defeat against Everton in August before being sidelined.
The forward scored 16 goals in 50 appearances last season and has established himself as an important figure at Selhurst Park.
His overall Palace record stands at 62 goals and 14 assists in 203 matches.
However, he now faces the challenge of regaining match fitness and impressing under manager Pierre Sage, who replaced Oliver Glasner during the summer.
Palace have nine fixtures scheduled before the next international break, giving Mateta opportunities to demonstrate his fitness and form if he returns in time.
