Everton midfielder Merlin Röhl has defended Liverpool's Florian Wirtz, arguing that his €125million transfer fee has made it difficult for the German international to escape criticism.

Wirtz has struggled to reproduce his Bayer Leverkusen form since moving to Anfield, with seven goals and 11 assists in 55 appearances.

Now playing under Andoni Iraola, the midfielder faces renewed pressure to justify his price tag following a disappointing debut season in England.

Röhl believes Wirtz's transfer fee increases pressure

Speaking to German publication Kicker, Röhl suggested that expectations surrounding Wirtz have been shaped by the enormous investment Liverpool made to sign him.

“People don’t quite know how to rate him yet,” the Everton midfielder explained.

“Then there’s that huge transfer fee, which doesn’t make things easy for anyone. But Flo is an incredibly good player.”

Wirtz arrived at Liverpool with an outstanding reputation after registering 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Liverpool's difficulties last season complicated his adaptation to Premier League football.

His performances have subsequently attracted criticism from pundits questioning whether he can reach the levels expected of such an expensive signing.

Everton star highlights Premier League scrutiny

Röhl also discussed the intensity of the English football environment, where opinions about players can change rapidly.

“You’re either praised to the skies or, at times, verbally torn to shreds,” he said.

“In a way, I think it’s precisely these extremes that fascinate people here about the sport.”

Despite the scrutiny, Röhl remains convinced of Wirtz's quality and believes the Liverpool midfielder deserves greater patience.

The challenge for Wirtz is now to establish himself within Iraola's system and turn his technical ability into consistent performances.

With the Merseyside derby approaching on 29 November, his progress will also be closely watched across the city.
