Jean-Philippe Mateta pushes to leave Crystal Palace as contract dispute threatens major twist

Jean-Philippe Mateta is pushing to leave Crystal Palace after his relationship with the club reportedly reached breaking point, with the striker's camp now prepared to challenge the legitimacy of his contract.

Mateta has already informed Palace that he wants a new challenge and has no intention of extending his current agreement.

However, the situation has now developed into something considerably more serious.

The Frenchman's representatives believe there is an issue surrounding the option Crystal Palace exercised in December 2024, which the club considers to have extended his contract until 2027.

According to The Athletic, Mateta and his representatives dispute Palace's interpretation of the extension clause.

The disagreement concerns the final year of the striker's contract, which began on July 1.

Mateta's camp reportedly believe the option was not exercised or interpreted correctly and are prepared to challenge the situation legally.

His representatives could take the matter to the courts and, if necessary, FIFA in an attempt to have their position recognised.

That could create a dramatic situation with just over a week remaining in the summer transfer window.

If Mateta were ultimately able to secure his release from Palace, the entire transfer picture surrounding the striker would change.

The contractual dispute comes against the backdrop of Mateta already wanting to leave Selhurst Park.

The striker has asked Crystal Palace to find a solution for his future after making it clear he does not want to sign another contract.

That leaves Palace facing a difficult decision.

They can maintain their position that Mateta remains contracted until 2027 and resist a transfer, or potentially look for a sale before the window closes while the disagreement continues behind the scenes.

The player's stance appears increasingly clear: he wants to move on.

Tottenham have emerged as a possible destination in recent days.

Roberto De Zerbi's side are searching for further attacking reinforcements after a major summer rebuild.

However, Mateta does not currently appear to be at the top of their list.

Spurs are working on deals involving Manchester City pair Savinho and Omar Marmoush, while Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo remains another target.

Mateta could nevertheless become an interesting late-window opportunity, particularly if his contractual situation develops quickly.

A move to Serie A currently appears much less likely.

Milan came close to signing Mateta in January and reportedly reached an agreement worth €30million plus bonuses.

That transfer collapsed after an issue with the striker's knee emerged during his medical.

Juventus have also tracked the Frenchman and still want another centre-forward to complement Randal Kolo Muani and Arkadiusz Milik.

However, they would first need to sell Jonathan David before being able to pursue another striker.

For now, neither Milan nor Juventus are expected to revive their interest.

The immediate focus will be on whether Mateta's representatives formally escalate their challenge over the contract extension.

Crystal Palace maintain an important position if the deal is valid until 2027, but Mateta's determination to leave could increase the pressure to find a transfer solution before the deadline.

Tottenham are one club being linked, although they currently have other attacking targets ahead of him. Milan and Juventus, meanwhile, appear unlikely destinations unless their situations change dramatically during the final days of the window.
