Jamie Carragher believes Mikel Arteta is becoming the “Sir Alex Ferguson of the Premier League” after the Arsenal manager publicly criticised the controversial penalty awarded against his side at Sunderland.
Arsenal eventually secured a 2-0 victory at the Stadium of Light through goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Bukayo Saka, but the match could have unfolded very differently.
Referee John Brooks awarded Sunderland a penalty after Ezri Konsa was adjudged to have brought down Dan Ballard early in the second half.
David Raya saved Enzo Le Fee’s resulting spot-kick, but Arteta remained furious and later described the decision as “unacceptable”.
Carragher compares Arteta with Ferguson
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher agreed that Sunderland should not have been awarded the penalty.
However, he was particularly interested in Arteta’s determination to publicly challenge the decision and compared his approach with legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
“This was Mikel Arteta becoming the Sir Alex Ferguson of the Premier League right now,” Carragher said.
“He’s the don at the moment; he’s the Premier League champion.”
Carragher believes Arteta’s longevity and success at Arsenal have put him in a position where his comments carry significant influence.
“A lot of new managers about... he’s been in his role for six or seven years, and he feels he’s in a position of power to say, ‘Yeah, it wasn’t a penalty’. And I don’t think it was a penalty.”
Arteta determined to influence Arsenal narrative
Carragher also highlighted how Arteta repeatedly returned to the penalty controversy during his post-match press conference.
He believes that was deliberate.
According to the former Liverpool defender, Arteta wanted to establish a clear narrative around the incident and ensure similar decisions are scrutinised in future.
“But it’d be interesting to see how long it takes for another referee to give a penalty against Arsenal in a similar situation,” Carragher added.
He compared that approach not only with Ferguson but also Jose Mourinho, two managers renowned for using press conferences to apply pressure and defend their clubs’ interests.
Arsenal contact Howard Webb
The controversy has continued despite Arsenal ultimately winning the match.
Football Place have since reported that Arsenal contacted Pro Ref chief Howard Webb seeking further clarification over the decision.
There is a feeling within the Arsenal camp that Raya’s penalty save should not diminish the significance of the incident.
Had Sunderland converted the spot-kick, the decision could have changed the match and potentially had wider consequences in Arsenal’s Premier League campaign.
For Carragher, Arteta’s response demonstrates the authority the Arsenal manager now possesses within English football.
