Crystal Palace open Dean Henderson contract talks after goalkeeper’s rise to captain

Crystal Palace have opened negotiations with Dean Henderson over a new long-term contract as they look to secure the future of one of their most influential players.

The England international has developed into a key figure at Selhurst Park since arriving from Manchester United for around £20million in 2023.

According to The Athletic, Palace have now entered formal discussions with Henderson over extending his stay. The 29-year-old still has two years remaining on the five-year contract he signed when joining the Eagles.

Henderson has made 119 appearances across all competitions for Palace, recording 38 clean sheets.

After initially facing competition for the number one position, he established himself as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. His emergence eventually contributed to Sam Johnstone leaving for Wolves in a £10m transfer two years ago.

Palace also demonstrated Henderson’s importance during the summer transfer window.

Nottingham Forest, where Henderson previously enjoyed a successful loan spell, were interested in signing him. However, Palace rejected an approach and made clear the goalkeeper was not available for transfer.

Henderson’s importance extends beyond his performances in goal.

Following Marc Guehi’s January move to Manchester City, the England international was appointed Crystal Palace captain, underlining his leadership role within the dressing room.

He has also played an important part in a historic period of success for the club.

Henderson saved Omar Marmoush’s penalty during Palace’s 2024-25 FA Cup final triumph before helping the Eagles win the 2025 Community Shield and last season’s UEFA Conference League.

Those achievements have strengthened his position as one of the central figures in Palace’s project.

The goalkeeper is currently recovering from an ankle injury suffered during Palace’s final pre-season friendly.

Henderson still started the opening three Premier League matches but missed the recent defeat against Ipswich Town.

He is now expected to remain unavailable when Palace begin their Europa League campaign against Lech Poznan on Thursday and could also miss Sunday’s Premier League trip to Leeds United.

With Palace sitting 16th after losing three of their opening four league matches, getting their captain back to full fitness will be an immediate priority.

Palace will continue contract discussions with Henderson while the goalkeeper completes his recovery. His immediate target will be returning after the international break and helping the Eagles recover from their difficult Premier League start.
