Leeds United have opened negotiations with Manchester City over a move for James Trafford, with the England goalkeeper emerging as Daniel Farke's leading target to strengthen the club's goalkeeping department.

The newly-promoted Premier League side are understood to be leading the race for the 23-year-old despite interest from both Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

With Leeds having already lost two senior goalkeepers this summer, Trafford has become a priority signing ahead of the new campaign.

Leeds lead race for Trafford

According to Sky Sports, Leeds are the most advanced club in the pursuit of Trafford after opening discussions with Manchester City.

The Yorkshire club have identified the England international as their preferred choice between the posts and are now working to agree a deal.

Newcastle United and Aston Villa have also monitored Trafford throughout the transfer window, but Leeds currently appear to be in the strongest position.

Manchester City future uncertain

Trafford returned to Manchester City from Burnley ahead of the 2025/26 season and featured 17 times in all competitions.

The goalkeeper kept eight clean sheets, impressing whenever called upon despite facing strong competition for the number one shirt.

Although he travelled to the FIFA World Cup with England this summer, Trafford did not make an appearance for Thomas Tuchel's side during the tournament.

Goalkeeper priority for Daniel Farke

Leeds have made signing a new goalkeeper one of their biggest priorities after the departures of Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier.

Darlow completed a move to Manchester United, while Meslier joined Arsenal, leaving Farke in urgent need of an experienced replacement before the Premier League season begins.

Trafford's Premier League experience and international pedigree make him an attractive option for the Whites.

Competition remains

Despite Leeds leading negotiations, the race is not yet over.

Newcastle and Aston Villa continue to admire Trafford and could still become involved if discussions with Manchester City stall.

For now, however, Leeds remain optimistic they can secure the goalkeeper's signature before the start of the new season.
