Fulham reject Issa Diop approach after World Cup turnaround

Issa Diop’s Fulham future has changed dramatically after his performances at the World Cup, with the club rejecting an official approach from Como for the centre-back.

A summer departure had previously looked possible. Diop endured a difficult 2025/26 season at Craven Cottage, with injuries and limited opportunities.

The 29-year-old finished the campaign with only 13 appearances and 1,264 minutes of football. Fulham had been prepared to listen to offers, but his performances for Morocco have prompted a rethink.

According to Africa Foot, Como have now discovered just how much the situation has changed. Their approach for Diop was rejected, with Fulham no longer willing to negotiate his departure under normal circumstances.

Diop’s lack of regular club football did not cost him his place in Morocco’s World Cup squad.

Apart from the match against Haiti, the defender played every minute of his country’s other three games. Those performances have strengthened his position both in the transfer market and at Fulham.

The timing is significant. Diop entered the summer as a player whose future appeared open after losing his place during the second half of last season. Beşiktaş had previously been mentioned as a possible destination, while his contract situation also created uncertainty.

The World Cup has altered that picture.

Fulham are now reported to consider Diop a priority for next season and have no intention of selling him unless an exceptional offer arrives. No figure has been placed on what would qualify as exceptional, but the rejection of Como’s approach suggests the club are no longer actively looking for an exit.

That represents a considerable turnaround for a player who appeared to be heading towards a decision over his future only a few months ago.

Como identified Diop as a target as Cesc Fàbregas looks to strengthen his defence, but the Serie A club have been met with a firm response.

Fulham are not currently interested in opening negotiations.

That stance is particularly notable because the London club are still going through managerial change. Marco Silva has left, with Álvaro Arbeloa considered the leading candidate to replace him, although an official announcement is still awaited.

Ordinarily, a new head coach might want to assess the entire squad before major decisions are made. Fulham’s position on Diop appears to have been established before that process is complete.

His World Cup form offers a clear explanation. A player who struggled for minutes at club level has shown he can still perform regularly on the international stage, forcing Fulham to reconsider whether selling him would leave them needing to spend money on another centre-back.

Based on the way his situation has developed, the tournament has done more than attract outside interest. It has restored his value to his current club.

However, it remains too early to say that Diop is certain to stay. Fulham are reportedly prepared to reconsider if an exceptional offer arrives, while the next manager’s plans will inevitably influence the final shape of the squad.

Keeping Diop creates another issue Fulham cannot ignore.

The defender has less than a year remaining on his contract, meaning he can leave for nothing in 2027 if no new agreement is reached.

That makes a renewal increasingly logical.

Fulham would be taking a considerable financial risk by rejecting offers this summer without securing Diop beyond the end of next season. His World Cup performances may have improved his sporting importance, but they have also strengthened his position in any contract discussions.

The club now face a different decision from the one they expected to make at the start of the summer. Instead of finding a buyer for a defender who had slipped down the hierarchy, they may need to convince him to commit his future to Craven Cottage.

For Diop, the past few weeks could hardly have gone better. Regular minutes for Morocco have revived outside interest and changed the way Fulham view his role.

The challenge now is turning that World Cup momentum into a clear plan for next season.

Fulham must now decide whether to follow their transfer stance with a new contract offer. Keeping Diop without extending his deal would leave the club exposed to losing him for nothing in 2027.

The appointment of a new manager should also bring further clarity. If Álvaro Arbeloa takes charge as expected, Diop’s role will need to be discussed as part of the wider squad planning. For now, though, the World Cup has changed his position completely: Fulham are rejecting approaches rather than looking for a buyer.
