Ipswich Town have emerged as the new favourites to sign Rennes striker Breel Embolo after the Switzerland international rejected a proposed move to Atlanta United.
Embolo is still expected to leave Rennes this summer, but his destination could now be the Premier League rather than Major League Soccer.
Atlanta had been moving towards an agreement worth €17m, a fee Rennes were reportedly satisfied with. However, the 29-year-old has rejected the salary proposal presented to him by the MLS club.
That has opened the door for Ipswich.
Ipswich open negotiations for Embolo
Ipswich have now entered talks over a move for the former Monaco striker as they look to strengthen their attack following promotion to the Premier League.
The Tractor Boys are reportedly prepared to meet Rennes' demands for Embolo and have already submitted a contract proposal to the player.
That puts Ipswich in a strong position to complete the transfer.
Embolo remains under contract with Rennes until June 2029, meaning the French club are in no immediate contractual pressure to sell.
However, with Rennes having already been willing to sanction his departure to Atlanta, the route towards an agreement with Ipswich appears open.
Atlanta United not giving up
Atlanta have not completely abandoned their pursuit despite Embolo turning down their initial salary proposal.
Their €17m agreement would have made the Swiss international one of the ten most expensive incoming transfers in MLS history.
For now, though, Ipswich are considered the favourites.
The Premier League opportunity could prove decisive as Embolo considers his next move, particularly with Ipswich prepared to satisfy Rennes financially.
