Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly revived their interest in Paris Saint-Germain defender Illia Zabarnyi, with a loan move considered the most likely option if negotiations progress.

Spurs were interested in the Ukraine international before he left Bournemouth for PSG last summer and are now monitoring his situation again following Cristian Romero's transfer to Atlético Madrid.

Ukrainian outlet Terrikon reports there is a "very real possibility" that Zabarnyi could leave Paris before the transfer window closes.

Tottenham return for Illia Zabarnyi

Tottenham's admiration for Zabarnyi stretches back to his time at Bournemouth.

Last summer, Spurs and Newcastle United were reported to be prepared to meet Bournemouth's €70m asking price, but Zabarnyi preferred PSG and completed his move to the Champions League winners in August 2025.

One year later, his future in France has become uncertain enough for Tottenham to reconsider their position.

Terrikon reports that Spurs have expressed an interest in the 23-year-old, although they have not yet advanced towards formal negotiations.

If discussions with PSG do begin, a loan is currently considered the most likely structure rather than another major permanent transfer.

Romero exit creates space in Tottenham defence

Tottenham's renewed interest comes after captain Cristian Romero joined Atlético Madrid, leaving Roberto De Zerbi without one of the club's most established centre-backs.

Spurs have already been active in addressing their defence.

Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke have arrived during the summer window, while Micky van de Ven recently committed his future to Tottenham with an improved long-term contract.

De Zerbi can also call upon Kevin Danso, Ben Davies and Kota Takai, meaning there is already significant competition for places.

That raises an obvious question over whether Zabarnyi would receive the regular football he may require if PSG allow him to leave.

Zabarnyi faces important decision over playing time

Zabarnyi was heavily involved last season, playing 2,780 minutes across 37 appearances for PSG. Seven of those appearances came in the Champions League, although they accounted for only 213 minutes.

His situation has been less straightforward at the beginning of the new campaign.

The Ukrainian did not feature in PSG's UEFA Super Cup victory over Aston Villa before playing the full 90 minutes in the Trophée des Champions defeat to RC Lens.

If his opportunities in Paris are expected to decrease, a temporary departure could become attractive. Tottenham's interest provides a potential Premier League route, although the depth of De Zerbi's defensive options means assurances over playing time could become important.

For now, Spurs have identified Zabarnyi as an option rather than moved into advanced negotiations.

Key Points

  • Tottenham have revived their interest in Illia Zabarnyi.
  • A loan from PSG is considered the most likely structure if talks progress.
  • Reports in Ukraine claim there is a "very real possibility" of Zabarnyi leaving PSG.
  • Spurs previously pursued the defender before his move from Bournemouth to Paris.
  • Tottenham already have significant centre-back competition following their summer recruitment.

What's Next?

Tottenham must decide whether to turn their renewed interest into formal discussions with PSG, while Zabarnyi's prospects in Paris are also likely to influence the situation.

A loan could reduce the financial commitment required from Spurs, but playing time may prove just as important to the defender when choosing his next move.

Should Tottenham pursue Zabarnyi despite their existing centre-back depth, or would a loan only make sense if he is guaranteed a major role? Have your say.
