Ilia Gruev has moved to shut down speculation over a potential Leeds United exit, insisting he remains fully committed to the club as they continue building towards long-term Premier League stability.

Speaking to a German outlet, the midfielder made it clear he is “very happy” at Elland Road and has no plans to leave in the summer of 2026. His comments arrive at a crucial stage of Leeds’ campaign, with the club balancing top-flight survival and cup ambitions.

Ilia Gruev Leeds United future clarified after transfer talk

Ilia Gruev joined Leeds United from Werder Bremen in August 2023 and has since become a regular part of the squad, making 86 appearances across all competitions. While a knee injury limited his involvement last season, he still played a role in the club’s Championship-winning campaign.

Reflecting on his move, the Bulgaria international highlighted the influence of manager Daniel Farke in convincing him to take the step to English football.

“Leeds presented me with a clear plan, and the phone call with Daniel was very promising. He showed me what kind of project was being developed in Leeds.” — Ilia Gruev, via Transfermarkt

Gruev also admitted leaving Werder Bremen after eight years was not straightforward, but described the decision as one that has “worked out perfectly” since his arrival in Yorkshire.

Commitment to Leeds project and fan connection

Despite previous hints about wanting more in his career, Gruev has now underlined his desire to remain part of Leeds’ long-term vision. The midfielder pointed to both the club’s development strategy and the relationship with supporters as key reasons behind his stance.

“I feel very comfortable here and I see how the club is developing. The long-term plan is to become a top 10 team in the Premier League.” — Ilia Gruev, via Transfermarkt

He also emphasised the role fans play in shaping the club environment, noting that supporters value players who commit to the journey over time. Based on recent matches we’ve covered, Leeds’ connection between squad and supporters has remained a visible factor throughout their return to the Premier League.

However, it remains too early to determine how quickly Leeds can achieve their stated ambition of becoming a top-10 side, given the competitive nature of the division.

Leeds United fixtures set defining run-in

Leeds currently sit 15th in the Premier League table, maintaining an eight-point cushion above the relegation zone. Their remaining fixtures include a mix of league and cup commitments that could define the trajectory of their season.

Key upcoming matches include:

  • 22 April 2026: AFC Bournemouth (away)
  • 26 April 2026: Chelsea (FA Cup semi-final)
  • 2 May 2026: Burnley (home)
  • 11 May 2026: Tottenham Hotspur (away)
  • Date TBC: Brighton & Hove Albion (home)
  • 24 May 2026: West Ham United (away)

These fixtures present both survival challenges and an opportunity to reach a domestic cup final.

What’s Next

Leeds United face a critical run of fixtures through late April and May 2026, with survival in the Premier League still to be mathematically secured. The FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea on 26 April also offers a significant opportunity for silverware. Gruev is expected to remain part of the rotation as Farke manages squad fitness and consistency during this decisive period.
