Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté has denied reports that he has been offered a new contract at Anfield — but revealed that talks are ongoing with the club and that he expects to make a decision on his future “very soon.”
The 25-year-old French centre-back has entered the final year of his Liverpool deal, making him one of the most valuable potential free agents next summer. His uncertain situation has drawn interest from Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich.
“I don’t know where that info comes from” – Konaté
Speaking in an interview this week, Konaté addressed speculation that Liverpool had tabled a new proposal to extend his stay beyond 2026.
“As for me, I’ve seen a lot of things, particularly in the media,” Konaté said.
“I saw that Liverpool made me a new offer recently. I don’t know where that info comes from. But now, my agents are still discussing with Liverpool. I hope my decision will be made and that I’ll be able to announce what I’ll do very soon.”
His comments confirm that while dialogue between his representatives and Liverpool’s hierarchy is ongoing, no formal offer has yet been submitted — despite reports to the contrary earlier this week.
Real Madrid, PSG and Bayern all on alert
Konaté’s contract situation has inevitably attracted attention from Europe’s elite. Real Madrid, who are expected to bolster their defensive options next summer, have been heavily linked, while PSG view him as a long-term successor to Marquinhos. Bayern Munich have also monitored his situation closely.
Liverpool, however, remain keen to keep the French international, who was a key component of Arne Slot’s title-winning side last season.
Ibrahima Konaté is currently on reported £70,000/£80,000 per week salary on his 5-year contract (2021/26) signed back in July 2021
Form dip complicates contract talks
After a stellar 2024/25 campaign in which he shone alongside Virgil van Dijk, helping Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th Premier League title, Konaté’s form has dipped sharply this term.
He’s come under criticism for a string of inconsistent displays, with defensive errors contributing to some costly results for Arne Slot’s side. Despite that, Liverpool continue to view him as an important long-term asset.

“Liverpool is on another level” – Konaté on life at Anfield
Reflecting on his journey since joining Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021, Konaté spoke about the magnitude of representing one of world football’s biggest clubs — and the pressure that comes with it.
“Before my transfer was announced, the manager Jürgen Klopp warned me: ‘Your status is going to change’,” he said.
“A day after the announcement, my Instagram account had tripled its followers. In Liverpool, football means everything. The heart of this city beats to the rhythm of the Reds.”
“It wasn’t so much my new surroundings that shocked me, but the sheer size of the club. After signing, without having even trained, I was recognised on the other side of the world on holiday with my family.”
The Frenchman also noted the difference in scrutiny between his current club and former side RB Leipzig:
“I discovered quickly that the media pressure is huge. A bad performance can have serious repercussions, whereas at Leipzig, our every move wasn’t scrutinised. The football is different, too. Unforgiving. The slightest mistake is seriously punished.”
Our View: Liverpool can’t afford to lose him for free
In our view, Konaté’s comments suggest a delicate standoff rather than a breakdown in negotiations. Liverpool are unlikely to risk losing one of their prime defensive assets on a free transfer — meaning a decision must come by January, when foreign clubs could legally approach him.
If no new deal is signed, a summer 2026 sale could become inevitable, with Real Madrid poised to test Liverpool’s resolve.
