Harvey Elliott is reportedly pushing Liverpool to accept a late loan offer from Valencia after the Spanish club made the 23-year-old their priority attacking target.
Valencia want to strengthen Carlos Corberán’s squad before Tuesday’s transfer deadline and negotiations with Liverpool are said to be progressing well.
However, the proposed deal remains complicated by Valencia’s financial position, with Los Ches only prepared to cover slightly more than half of Elliott’s salary.
Valencia make Elliott priority target
According to AS, Valencia want to complete the operation quickly and have identified Elliott as their preferred attacking addition.
The plan is to sign the Liverpool midfielder on loan, but Valencia must also create space in their squad by moving on André Almeida or Dani Raba.
Elliott's versatility appeals to Corberán because he can operate in several attacking positions.
Should Valencia complete the deal, they are expected to abandon their alternative pursuit of Leeds United winger Largie Ramazani.
Leeds would prefer to sell Ramazani rather than sanction another loan, making Elliott the more attractive target for Valencia if an agreement can be found with Liverpool.
Corberán convinces Elliott over Valencia move
Journalist Nacho Sanchis reports that Corberán has personally intervened in Valencia's pursuit.
The manager held a video call with Elliott to explain his plans and convince him of the benefits of moving to Mestalla.
That approach appears to have worked.
Elliott is reportedly prepared to speak directly with Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola and ask him to accept Valencia's proposal.
The midfielder has returned to Anfield following a disappointing loan spell at Aston Villa and has several options to leave Liverpool again before the deadline.
Despite that interest, Elliott's preference is Valencia.
Sanchis reports that the player is attracted by the Spanish club's reputation and was convinced by his conversation with Corberán.
Liverpool salary demand complicates transfer
The biggest obstacle is the financial structure of Valencia's proposal.
Los Ches are prepared to cover just over 50 per cent of Elliott's wages and want Liverpool to pay the remainder for the duration of the loan.
Other clubs interested in Elliott are reportedly prepared to cover his entire salary, giving Liverpool more financially attractive alternatives.
Valencia themselves reportedly recognise that convincing Liverpool to accept those terms will be extremely difficult.
Elliott, however, hopes his determination to join the La Liga club can influence Liverpool's decision during the final days of the window.
