Guglielmo Vicario opens up on Tottenham exit after sealing Juventus dream move

Guglielmo Vicario has revealed he always hoped to join Juventus during the summer after completing his loan move from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 29-year-old was repeatedly linked with a return to Serie A, with Inter Milan and Napoli among the clubs credited with interest. Juventus ultimately secured his signature after Michele Di Gregorio moved to Bournemouth.

Vicario has immediately established himself in Turin, starting Juventus' opening two Serie A matches and helping his new side keep two clean sheets.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Vicario explained that Juventus had been his preferred destination towards the end of his Tottenham career.

“I've always hoped to join Juventus, but I can't control the transfer market,” he said.

The goalkeeper revealed he went through pre-season without playing any friendlies while waiting for the move to materialise.

“I waited for Juve, but I never felt like a second-string player. If I'm here, it's because the club and the coach chose me and wanted me as Juventus' goalkeeper. It was my goal, and I achieved it.”

For Vicario, the attraction went well beyond simply returning to Italian football.

“Juve is worth more than the Premier League,” he said. “Winning with this shirt would be the ultimate gratification and worth more than anything else.”

Vicario's attachment to Juventus stretches back to childhood.

His father and cousin supported the Turin club, while legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon became one of his biggest inspirations.

Vicario recalled receiving a signed Buffon shirt as a birthday present, saying it “watched over me for many years and brought me good luck”.

That history has made finally representing Juventus particularly significant.

“Wearing the Juventus jersey is such a privilege and an honour,” he explained. “The emotions are indescribable.”

Vicario has also made an encouraging start on the pitch, looking assured during his opening appearances and helping Juventus begin the campaign with consecutive clean sheets.

After a difficult final season at Tottenham, his move back to Italy has already provided the goalkeeper with the fresh start he wanted.

Vicario will now look to turn his promising start into a successful season as Juventus' first-choice goalkeeper.
