Iraola sends clear Gakpo message after Man City transfer collapse

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has made it clear he is delighted to still have Cody Gakpo available after the Dutchman's proposed move to Manchester City collapsed late in the transfer window.

Gakpo had been close to leaving Anfield for City and was reportedly disappointed when the transfer failed to materialise. City eventually moved for Everton's Iliman Ndiaye instead.

Despite that disappointment, Iraola insists there are no concerns about Gakpo's condition or commitment as Liverpool prepare to face Ipswich Town.

Iraola revealed that communication with Gakpo remained open throughout the uncertainty surrounding his future.

“My relationship with Cody has been very open from the beginning,” Iraola said at his pre-Ipswich press conference. “He has played very well for us so far.”

The Liverpool manager explained that Gakpo was fully aware of developments in the transfer market and remained in regular dialogue with him.

“I hope we can keep him at the same level,” Iraola added. “He is in a good place both physically and mentally, and I'm very happy that I can select him.”

That will be particularly encouraging given Gakpo's strong start to the Premier League campaign. The 27-year-old has started Liverpool's opening two matches, contributing one goal and one assist.

Gakpo's failed departure does mean Iraola now has another major selection decision following the arrival of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.

Barcola has trained with his new Liverpool teammates, although his lack of match preparation could delay his introduction.

“I see that he is in a good place,” Iraola said. “He has trained with us, but it is true that he didn't get any minutes in pre-season.”

Iraola stressed that Liverpool must take that lack of competitive preparation into consideration when deciding whether Barcola is ready to feature against Ipswich.

For Gakpo, the situation is much clearer. A move to Manchester City may have disappeared, but Iraola still views the Netherlands international as an important part of his Liverpool side.

Gakpo will now turn his attention fully towards Liverpool, starting with the Premier League meeting against Ipswich Town.

Barcola's arrival increases the competition for attacking places, but Iraola's comments suggest Gakpo remains firmly in his immediate plans despite the transfer disappointment.
