AS Roma end Givairo Read pursuit after Feyenoord reject €29m offer

AS Roma have abandoned their pursuit of Feyenoord full-back Givairo Read after failing to reach an agreement with the Eredivisie club over a summer transfer.

According to De Telegraaf, Roma's final proposal could have risen to at least €29 million through performance-related bonuses, but Feyenoord remained unmoved and declined to negotiate a deal. The Italian side have now shifted their attention to Atlético Madrid defender Nahuel Molina instead.

Roma's decision leaves Read at Feyenoord for the time being, with the Dutch club showing no intention of lowering their valuation despite sustained interest throughout the transfer window.

The latest rejection underlines Feyenoord's strong negotiating position.

Technical director Devy Rigaux has already turned down several approaches for the 20-year-old this summer, including multiple bids from Premier League side Nottingham Forest. Roma's improved offer also failed to convince the Rotterdam club to sanction a sale.

With Read under contract until June 2029, Feyenoord are under little financial pressure to sell one of their brightest young talents. The long-term agreement has strengthened the club's position throughout negotiations and allowed them to resist growing interest from abroad.

Having failed to secure Read's signature, Roma have identified Atlético Madrid's Nahuel Molina as their preferred alternative.

Reports in Italy suggest the Argentina international could be available for a fee of around €17 million, making him a significantly cheaper option than the package required to prise Read away from Feyenoord.

Roma's switch in focus effectively removes one of the strongest contenders for the Dutch defender, although interest from elsewhere remains.

The developments also appear to end speculation surrounding an alleged release clause in Read's contract.

Instead, De Telegraaf reports that Feyenoord are keen to reward the defender with an improved and extended deal, reflecting both his growing importance to the squad and the club's desire to keep him beyond the current agreement.

While the transfer window remains open and further interest cannot be ruled out, Feyenoord's stance has been consistent throughout the summer: Read will only leave if an exceptional offer arrives.

With Roma no longer in the race, attention will turn to whether any other clubs are prepared to match Feyenoord's valuation before the transfer window closes. Nottingham Forest have shown strong interest throughout the summer, but Feyenoord's refusal to negotiate below their asking price suggests the defender is increasingly likely to remain in Rotterdam. The club's intention to open talks over a new contract would further strengthen that position.
