Gary Neville has launched a strong criticism of Manchester United following their 4-2 pre-season defeat to Ruben Amorim's AC Milan, insisting the Red Devils need new signings.
United twice took the lead against their former manager's side but eventually conceded three quick second-half goals as Milan turned the game around.
Neville was particularly unimpressed given Milan were missing several regular starters and had entered the friendly without a victory in their previous three matches.
Neville says Manchester United were 'massacred'
Speaking after the game, the former United defender questioned the attention surrounding the reunion with Amorim.
“The obsession with beating Amorim was ridiculous,” Neville said, according to Sportmediaset.
“United were massacred by a team missing several starters and who exploited the spaces left open. They hadn't won for three games.”
Harry Maguire had given Michael Carrick's team an early lead before Samuel Chukwueze equalised.
Patrick Dorgu then restored United's advantage in the second half, only for Milan to respond emphatically through Alphadjo Cissè, Gonçalo Ramos and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
The result handed United their second defeat across six pre-season fixtures.
Neville calls for Manchester United signings
Neville believes the solution is straightforward as Carrick prepares for the start of the Premier League campaign.
“The solution is to buy new players,” the former defender added.
Carrick also admitted after the match that there were “no excuses” for the performance, despite several players still building their fitness.
United's pre-season has produced positives, including victory over Atletico Madrid and a draw against European champions Paris Saint-Germain, but the manner of the Milan defeat has provided Carrick with problems to address before competitive action begins.
