Fulham walk off against Malaga as Spanish media blast ‘childish’ behaviour

Fulham have come under heavy criticism in Spain after walking off the pitch during their pre-season friendly against Malaga, with local media branding the Premier League club's actions "childish" following a controversial ending.

The 36th Costa del Sol Trophy ended in dramatic fashion after a disputed late penalty decision sparked protests from Fulham, eventually leading to the match descending into chaos.

According to Málaga Hoy, Fulham strongly objected to a penalty awarded to the hosts in the closing stages of the 2-2 draw.

The report claims the visitors argued that a post-match penalty shootout had not been included in the agreed match arrangements and were concerned about missing their scheduled flight home.

Spanish outlet Málaga Hoy, however, dismissed Fulham's explanation, describing the club's account as "not very convincing."

The situation escalated when Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa confronted the match officials following the penalty decision.

According to the report, the Spaniard "made a scene" before being shown a straight red card.

Shortly afterwards, defender Calvin Bassey encouraged his teammates to leave the field, bringing the evening to an abrupt end before the scheduled conclusion.

Málaga Hoy was highly critical of Fulham's conduct, describing the Premier League side's reaction as both "childish and bizarre."

The newspaper also praised Malaga's performance, insisting the Spanish club had done nothing wrong during the incident.

As Fulham headed for the tunnel, the home supporters reportedly responded with ironic chants of "Champions, champions!", while another chant asking "Where is Arbeloa?" echoed around the stadium.

Fulham maintain their actions were prompted by the match agreement not being honoured, while the Spanish publication firmly rejects that explanation. As things stand, the two sides remain at odds over what caused the chaotic conclusion to the friendly.

It remains to be seen whether either club will issue a further statement regarding the incident. Fulham will now turn their attention to the start of the Premier League season, while Malaga continue their preparations for the new campaign after a friendly that has generated significant attention in Spain.
