Fresh doubts have been raised over the collapse of Ricardo Pepi's proposed move to Fulham, with a leading Dutch journalist claiming the Premier League club have not revealed the full story behind the failed transfer.
The United States international looked set to complete a switch to Craven Cottage earlier this summer after Fulham revived their long-standing interest, only for the deal to unexpectedly break down after the striker travelled to England for a medical.
While previous reports blamed disagreements over the timing of the transfer, journalist Valentijn Driessen believes there is more to the story.
Journalist disputes Fulham's explanation
Speaking on Dutch television programme Vandaag Inside, Driessen questioned the official version of events surrounding Pepi's failed move.
"Of course he's been rejected.
"But they don't mention that. It was all sorted. He was only supposed to go to England for a medical, and then suddenly he's back."
The comments directly challenge reports that suggested Fulham and PSV Eindhoven were unable to agree on when the striker would officially leave the Dutch club.
Neither Fulham nor PSV have publicly responded to Driessen's claims.
Transfer now looks increasingly difficult
Pepi had been a priority target for Fulham for several months.
The Premier League side first attempted to sign the striker during the January transfer window before PSV refused to sanction a sale. Negotiations resumed after the season, with the clubs eventually reaching an agreement in principle before the move unexpectedly collapsed.
According to Driessen, the failed transfer could now make it more difficult for PSV to find another buyer.
The 23-year-old also endured a disappointing World Cup, playing just 202 minutes across five appearances without scoring, doing little to strengthen his position in the transfer market.
Uncertain future at PSV
Pepi's prospects at PSV have also become less clear.
With Alassane Pléa back to full fitness and reportedly impressing in pre-season, competition for places in attack is increasing ahead of the new campaign.
That raises further questions about Pepi's role should he remain in Eindhoven, particularly after missing what appeared to be his best opportunity to secure a move to the Premier League.
For Fulham, meanwhile, attention has already shifted towards alternative attacking targets as they continue reshaping the squad under Marco Silva.
