Trincão transfer shifts as Liverpool pursuit cools

Francisco Trincão is becoming increasingly open to a move to Saudi Arabia as uncertainty grows over Liverpool’s pursuit of the Sporting attacker.

The Portugal international has been repeatedly linked with a Premier League transfer this summer, with Liverpool frequently presented by Portuguese reports as one of the leading candidates for his signature.

However, A Bola now reports that Saudi Arabia has developed from a fallback option into a genuine possibility for the 26-year-old. England remains Trincão’s preferred destination, but his willingness to consider the Saudi Pro League could significantly change the transfer race.

The situation is also developing as Liverpool’s immediate need for another attacker appears less certain following their reported signing of Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna.

Trincão has been linked with a move away from Sporting throughout the summer, and A Bola believes there is now little prospect of him remaining in Lisbon.

The newspaper goes as far as suggesting the winger has effectively “packed his bags”, with a departure expected after Portugal’s World Cup campaign and his subsequent holiday.

Saudi Arabia had previously been viewed as an alternative only if a move to England failed to materialise. According to the latest report, that position has changed because Trincão himself is now increasingly receptive to the possibility.

That gives Saudi clubs a genuine opportunity to compete for a player who has spent his entire senior career in European football.

Trincão previously played for Barcelona and Wolverhampton Wanderers before establishing himself at Sporting, where he has developed into one of the club’s most valuable attacking players.

Recent reports in Portugal have repeatedly placed Liverpool towards the front of the queue for Trincão.

He had even been presented as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, but the situation may have shifted following Liverpool’s reported acquisition of Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna.

Another attacking arrival could reduce the immediate need to spend heavily on Trincão, particularly when Sporting are expected to demand between €40 million and €50m (£33.7m-£42.1m).

A Bola also offers a more cautious assessment of the Premier League interest than some previous Portuguese reports. The newspaper believes England remains Trincão’s most likely destination, but suggests the strongest possibilities may come from clubs competing for European qualification rather than those expected to challenge for the title.

That distinction could be important for Liverpool.

Sporting renewed Trincão’s contract until 2030 in March, maintaining his €60m (£50.5m) release clause.

The new agreement did not, according to A Bola, remove the player’s ambition to leave. Sporting are said to understand his position and are now expected to seek a substantial return on their investment.

The Portuguese champions have gradually increased their financial commitment to Trincão since first bringing him back to Portugal from Barcelona in 2022.

Sporting initially paid €3m (£2.5m) for his loan before spending another €7m (£5.9m) to acquire 50% of his rights in 2023. A further €11m (£9.3m) payment last summer completed the process, taking the club’s total investment to approximately €18m (£15.2m).

A sale for between €40m and €50m would therefore generate a sizeable profit.

That price would also remain comfortably below Trincão’s €60m release clause, giving interested clubs room to negotiate without forcing them to trigger the contractual figure in full.

The most significant development is not simply that Saudi clubs are interested. It is that Trincão is reportedly willing to listen.

That potentially strengthens Sporting’s negotiating position because Premier League clubs can no longer assume England is the only realistic destination for the Portugal international.

Saudi clubs have the financial capacity to compete for major transfers, while Sporting are under no pressure to accept a reduced offer after securing Trincão to a long-term contract.

For Liverpool, the question is whether their previous interest develops into something more concrete. If the club’s attacking plans have changed following the Muñoz deal, Saudi Arabia or another Premier League side could move ahead in the race.

England is still described as Trincão’s preferred destination, but the gap between his first choice and the alternatives appears to be narrowing.

Trincão’s immediate focus remains Portugal’s World Cup campaign, with any transfer expected to progress after the tournament and his subsequent break.

Sporting will wait for concrete offers while the attacker assesses his options. England remains the most likely destination according to A Bola, but Saudi Arabia can no longer be dismissed as a secondary possibility.

Liverpool’s position will also become clearer as their summer squad planning develops. If the Reds decide they no longer need another attacker, the race could open up for Premier League rivals or Saudi clubs prepared to meet Sporting’s valuation.
