Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has revealed he’s targeting a return to the England squad after a surprise phone call from new national team manager Thomas Tuchel.
Mount, 26, has endured a frustrating spell at Old Trafford since his big-money move from Chelsea in 2023, with injuries limiting his impact across two seasons. But after a positive pre-season under Erik ten Hag, the midfielder is hoping for a breakout campaign — and a shot at representing England again.
Speaking to reporters this week, Mount said his motivation has doubled following a personal chat with Tuchel, who coached him to Champions League glory at Chelsea.
“He looked in loads of energy, like I remember… He said there’s no guarantees, even though I played for him. But it gives you more — you want to push even more to be back in the squad.” — Mason Mount
Why Mount Hasn’t Played for England Since 2022
Mount last featured for the Three Lions during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. A string of injury setbacks, including hamstring and knee issues, saw him fall out of favour during Gareth Southgate’s final year in charge.
Now, with Tuchel ushering in a new era for England, Mount’s close relationship with the German tactician could give him a slight edge — but only if he earns it on the pitch.

Analyst Verdict: A Make-or-Break Season at United
If Mount wants to break back into the England setup, he’ll need to deliver a consistent season at Manchester United — something he hasn’t managed so far.
With Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Ugarte and Casemiro all competing for midfield minutes, Mount needs to rediscover the spark that made him a Chelsea fan-favourite and Southgate regular.

What’s Next for Mason Mount?
Mount is expected to play a key role in Manchester United’s midfield during the early stages of the 2025/26 campaign. If he stays injury-free and produces consistent form, a September England call-up under Thomas Tuchel is a real possibility.
With Euro 2028 qualifiers on the horizon and England’s new era taking shape, Mount must prove he’s still capable of competing at the highest level — and this season could be his final chance to do so.

It's over, never the player he was and will when he was at Chelsea. I dont see him starting for United either... It's Bruno who will start on that midfield of Amorim.
