River Plate are reportedly closing in on a new contract for goalkeeper Santiago Beltrán that could include a €100 million release clause, following interest from Aston Villa and other European clubs.

The 22-year-old was linked with Unai Emery's side during the summer as Villa searched for a replacement for Emiliano Martínez.

Villa ultimately signed Zion Suzuki from Parma, but River are now seeking to protect one of their most promising players from future transfer approaches.

River Plate advance Santiago Beltrán contract talks

According to Argentine journalist Sebastián Srur, negotiations over Beltrán's contract extension are progressing.

The goalkeeper's current agreement expires in December 2027, and River want to secure his long-term future with improved terms and a substantially higher release clause.

Argentine publications Clarín and La Nación report that the proposed clause would be worth €100m, although the agreement has not yet been finalised.

The figure would represent a significant increase on his existing €25m clause.

However, it should be viewed primarily as a measure to protect River's negotiating position rather than an indication of the fee European clubs are prepared to pay.

Beltrán's emergence has attracted attention beyond Argentina.

According to La Nación, he has made 41 appearances for River, keeping 17 clean sheets, and earned his senior Argentina debut against Honduras in June.

Aston Villa interest followed Martínez departure

Villa reportedly monitored Beltrán during the summer transfer window, with scouts travelling to Argentina to assess his development.

Earlier reports also suggested that Martínez had recommended the young goalkeeper to his former club.

However, Emery's side eventually turned to Suzuki, signing the Japan international from Parma in a deal reportedly worth €30m.

The 24-year-old has established himself as Villa's first-choice goalkeeper following Martínez's move to Chelsea.

Suzuki produced another strong display during Saturday's 2–1 Premier League victory over Manchester City, making six saves as Nicolas Jackson scored twice.

His performances have reduced Villa's immediate need to pursue another goalkeeper.

Could Villa return for Beltrán?

River's proposed contract extension would make any future pursuit of Beltrán more complicated.

Although Villa have previously been linked with the Argentine, there is no confirmation that they have submitted an offer or intend to reopen negotiations.

With Suzuki performing well, Beltrán currently represents a potential long-term option rather than an obvious immediate priority.
