Florian Wirtz has explained how Andoni Iraola's tactical instructions helped him score his first Premier League goal of the season during Liverpool's 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace.
The German midfielder finished Bradley Barcola's low cross in the 54th minute at Selhurst Park, doubling Liverpool's lead after Alexis Mac Allister's first-half opener.
Alexander Isak added a late third as the Reds returned to winning ways and climbed to fourth in the Premier League.
Florian Wirtz praises Liverpool's efficiency
Speaking to Sky Sports after Sunday's victory, Wirtz welcomed the result following a difficult run for Liverpool.
"It was a good game from us. I'm really happy about the win. I think that's all what counts," he said.
The 23-year-old acknowledged that Liverpool had not created numerous clear opportunities.
"I would say that we were just efficient in front of the goal. We didn't have so many clear chances."
Liverpool made their attacking moments count despite Palace threatening during the first half.
Iraola's attacking instructions pay off
Wirtz's goal came from a move that demonstrated the penalty-area movement Iraola has been demanding.
Barcola accelerated down the right before delivering a low cross, allowing Wirtz to arrive centrally and finish first time.
"The manager was talking so much to us to arrive into the box and I think we were with three players in the box," Wirtz revealed.
"Luckily, the ball came to me and I could score."
Iraola had previously stressed the importance of committing more players forward rather than relying solely on possession and crosses.
Wirtz's finish provided an encouraging example of that approach.
Liverpool move into Premier League top four
Liverpool's victory, combined with Chelsea's defeat at Sunderland, moved Iraola's side into fourth place.
"I think we are always confident because we know what a team we have and what quality we have," Wirtz said.
"It doesn't really matter if it's away from home but for sure we need to get more points also in the home games."
