Federico Chiesa emerges as Inter target after Liverpool setback

Federico Chiesa has emerged as a potential late transfer target for Inter Milan as the Serie A champions search for another attacker and the Italian finds himself on the fringes at Liverpool.

Inter have adjusted their transfer strategy during the closing weeks of the window, according to reports in Italy, and could make two additions if Luis Henrique leaves.

Curtis Jones remains an option for midfield, although his non-EU status has reportedly complicated Inter's planning. That has contributed to attention turning towards another potential Liverpool deal involving Chiesa.

Chiesa had hoped to establish himself under Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, but his situation has become increasingly difficult towards the end of pre-season.

The Italian has been used as a central striker, a position which does not naturally suit his characteristics, while Liverpool's attacking competition could soon increase further.

The Reds are reportedly working to complete a deal for Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, which would add another high-level option in Chiesa's preferred area of the pitch.

His involvement in Liverpool's two friendlies against Como has also been presented in Italy as evidence that he remains on the fringes of the first-team project.

If that situation continues, his opportunities at Anfield could again be limited.

Inter want an attacker capable of providing vertical running and strong one-on-one ability, with the desired profile compared to players such as Ademola Lookman and Marcus Thuram.

Chiesa fits many of those technical requirements and his status as an Italian player would also help Inter from a squad-building perspective.

The 28-year-old had initially intended to fight for his Liverpool future this summer but had also left the door open to returning to Serie A, even considering a possible Juventus reunion.

A late-window deal could now appeal to Inter if Liverpool make Chiesa available on favourable financial terms.

Inter must first determine how their remaining squad and non-EU places affect their final transfer plans, with Luis Henrique's potential departure particularly important.

If the Nerazzurri decide to prioritise an attacker and Liverpool open the door to a low-cost deal, Chiesa could become a serious option during the closing stages of the window.
