Everton step up Rico Lewis pursuit as David Moyes targets Man City defender

Everton have intensified their pursuit of Manchester City defender Rico Lewis, with David Moyes reportedly identifying the versatile 21-year-old as one of his priority targets ahead of the new Premier League season.

Lewis is expected to hold talks over his future after slipping down the pecking order during Pep Guardiola's final campaign at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City are understood to be open to offers if their valuation is met, giving Everton hope of completing a deal.

Moyes is personally driving Everton's interest because of Lewis' ability to fill several positions across the pitch.

The England Under-21 international is comfortable at right-back, left-back and in defensive midfield, making him an attractive option as Everton look to replace the retired Seamus Coleman while also strengthening other areas of the squad.

His arrival could allow Jake O'Brien to return to his preferred role at centre-back while also providing cover for Vitaliy Mykolenko and helping fill the gap left by Idrissa Gana Gueye's departure.

Lewis remains under contract until 2030, meaning City are under no pressure to sell. However, after making just 11 Premier League appearances last season, including only four starts, the defender is believed to be assessing whether a move would offer greater first-team opportunities under new head coach Enzo Maresca.

Reports suggest a fee in the region of £30 million could be enough for City to consider a sale before the transfer window closes.

Everton are believed to favour a permanent deal, particularly because Premier League loan rules would prevent them from signing both Lewis and Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City during the same transfer window.

Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Fulham have all tracked Lewis in recent months, but Everton are currently regarded as the club showing the strongest interest.

The coming weeks could prove decisive as Maresca finalises his plans for the season and discusses Lewis' role within the squad. Should the City academy graduate decide regular football is his priority, Everton appear well placed to test Manchester City's resolve.
