Enzo Fernandez Chelsea future in focus after World Cup final red card

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has returned to the spotlight after a dramatic end to Argentina's World Cup campaign, with his dismissal in the final against Spain adding fresh scrutiny to speculation surrounding his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

The 25-year-old was sent off in extra time after picking up a second yellow card during Argentina's defeat, before post-match confrontations involving several of Lionel Scaloni's players overshadowed Spain's celebrations.

With the World Cup now over, attention is expected to turn back to Fernandez's club future as links with Real Madrid continue.

Argentina struggled to match Spain throughout the final and finished the match with ten men after Fernandez's late dismissal.

The Chelsea midfielder was initially booked for dissent after protesting a refereeing decision before receiving a second caution in stoppage time for a heavy challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí.

Following the final whistle, tensions escalated as Leandro Paredes was dismissed after confronting Spain's players during their celebrations, while Nahuel Molina also became involved in the disorder. Spain completed their trophy presentation despite the incidents.

Fernandez's future has been the subject of increasing speculation throughout the year.

The midfielder fuelled reports of a possible move by admitting during the March international break that he enjoys Madrid and sees similarities between the Spanish capital and his hometown of Buenos Aires. Those comments prompted links with Real Madrid, although the Spanish club have yet to make a formal move.

Chelsea remain keen to retain Fernandez and are understood to value him at around £120 million. His current contract runs until 2032, while the player previously indicated any discussions over his future would wait until after the World Cup.

Since joining from Benfica in February 2023 for a British-record fee, Fernandez has made 169 appearances for the Blues, helping the club win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup while also captaining the side on several occasions.

Chelsea have already been active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in new signings while raising significant funds through outgoing transfers. Should Fernandez eventually depart, the club would likely need to strengthen further in midfield despite already having Moisés Caicedo, Roméo Lavia and Dário Essugo available.

Fernandez is expected to return to Chelsea following his post-tournament break before pre-season preparations begin. With the World Cup concluded, attention is likely to shift back towards his future as the summer transfer window enters a decisive stage.
