Edson Álvarez reportedly wants to leave West Ham United immediately, with 1. FC Köln working to find a solution for a difficult summer transfer.

The Mexico international is returning to the Hammers after Fenerbahçe decided against activating their option to buy him following a season-long loan.

West Ham will play in the Championship next season, but Álvarez has no intention of leaving European football. According to Sky Deutschland, the 28-year-old is open to joining Köln and wants to make the move immediately.

Edson Álvarez pushes for West Ham exit

Köln are seriously considering a move for Álvarez, although the finances involved make the transfer difficult.

The Bundesliga club are not giving up and continue to work on a possible solution. Signing a player of Álvarez's experience would be viewed as a major coup for Köln.

Club América are also interested in bringing the midfielder back to Mexico, but Álvarez has reportedly ruled out that option. His priority is to remain in Europe.

The midfielder joined West Ham from Ajax in 2023 and still has two years remaining on his contract, leaving the Hammers in control of negotiations.

Why West Ham could block Álvarez transfer

West Ham's midfield situation could make an exit more complicated.

Mateus Fernandes has already joined Tottenham, while Tomáš Souček appears to have suffered a serious injury at the World Cup. James Ward-Prowse is also unlikely to have a major future under Nuno Espírito Santo after spending last season on loan.

That leaves Álvarez among the experienced midfield options available to the West Ham manager.

Even if the Mexican wants to leave, the Hammers could decide to keep him or demand a significant fee before approving a transfer.

Key Points

  • Edson Álvarez wants to leave West Ham and is keen on an immediate move to Köln.
  • The midfielder is returning after Fenerbahçe rejected their option to buy him.
  • Köln are working to find a financial solution despite the transfer being difficult.
  • Álvarez has ruled out a return to Mexico and wants to continue playing in Europe.
  • West Ham's midfield problems could make the club reluctant to sanction his departure.

What’s next?

Köln must now find a transfer structure that works financially and convince West Ham to negotiate.

Álvarez's desire to move could help their pursuit, but the Hammers' squad situation gives Nuno a strong reason to keep him. With two years remaining on his contract, West Ham can demand favourable terms before allowing an exit.

Can Köln find a solution to give Álvarez the immediate West Ham exit he wants?
