Edson Álvarez must accept a significant pay cut before his proposed loan move from West Ham United to FC Köln can be completed.
According to Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, West Ham and Köln have reached an agreement over a temporary transfer for the Mexico international.
However, there is still no agreement between Álvarez and the Bundesliga club. His salary is now the main obstacle standing in the way of the move.
West Ham agree Álvarez loan with Köln
Álvarez remains under contract with West Ham until 2028, but his future appears to lie away from the club.
The former Ajax midfielder spent last season on loan at Fenerbahçe and does not want to play in the Championship following West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League.

“The main problem is reaching a full agreement with Álvarez over his salary,” Plettenberg reported.
“The 28-year-old leader would have to accept a significant pay cut to join Köln.”
No exact figures have been reported, but Köln cannot match the midfielder’s current West Ham salary.
Álvarez is reportedly attracted by the opportunity to play in the Bundesliga and has shown interest in the move. Whether he is prepared to make the required financial sacrifice remains unclear.
Turkish offer gives Álvarez another option
Köln are not the only club interested in the Mexico international.
Álvarez has also received an offer from Türkiye, although the identity of the club has not been revealed.
He already knows the Süper Lig after making 18 appearances for Fenerbahçe last season. His campaign was disrupted by injury problems, but another move to Türkiye could provide an alternative if talks with Köln fail.
