Edson Álvarez move to FC Köln in doubt over salary demands

Edson Álvarez's proposed departure from West Ham United is in danger of collapsing, with the midfielder's wage demands threatening to derail a move to Bundesliga side FC Köln.

Although the two clubs are believed to have reached an agreement over a loan deal, negotiations with the Mexico international have yet to produce a breakthrough.

Reports in Germany suggest Köln still view Álvarez as their priority midfield target, but the financial package required to complete the transfer is proving difficult.

The Bundesliga club are understood to have agreed a loan structure with West Ham, leaving personal terms as the final hurdle.

However, Álvarez's current salary is significantly higher than Köln's wage structure, making an agreement increasingly difficult unless one side compromises.

For now, discussions remain ongoing.

With negotiations stalling, Köln have already identified an alternative.

Former midfielder Ellyes Skhiri, now at Eintracht Frankfurt, has emerged as a realistic backup option should the deal for Álvarez collapse.

The Tunisia international previously spent four successful seasons at Köln, and reports claim preliminary talks have already taken place.

Unlike Álvarez, Skhiri is viewed as a financially achievable signing.

Álvarez remains under contract at West Ham but spent last season on loan at Fenerbahçe, avoiding the Hammers' relegation to the Championship.

Speaking recently, the former Ajax midfielder also acknowledged the affection he still has for the Dutch club.

"Ajax's fans will always be in my heart. I hope to see them again soon. Right now I'm a West Ham player. First my focus was on the World Cup, then we'll see what happens."

Despite that emotional connection, there is currently no indication that Ajax are preparing a move.

Köln will continue discussions with Álvarez's representatives in an attempt to find a compromise on personal terms. If no agreement can be reached soon, the Bundesliga side are expected to switch their full attention to Ellyes Skhiri, leaving Álvarez's future at West Ham unresolved heading into the new season.
