Chelsea hold key advantage in race for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa

Chelsea have reportedly been identified as one of the few clubs capable of convincing Diogo Costa to leave FC Porto, with leading Portuguese pundits suggesting the goalkeeper would only consider a move to Europe's elite.

Despite another outstanding season in Portugal, Porto president André Villas-Boas recently revealed the club have received no formal approaches for their number one, leaving many observers surprised that one of Europe's highest-rated goalkeepers remains at the Estádio do Dragão.

Diogo Costa's future has become a major talking point in Portugal after another impressive campaign for Porto.

Speaking on Mercado NOW, pundit José Nunes questioned why Europe's biggest clubs have yet to make a serious move for the goalkeeper.

Nunes described Costa as Porto's best player and one of the standout performers in the Portuguese league last season, arguing the club are fully justified in demanding a fee close to his €60 million release clause.

According to Portuguese journalist Pedro Sousa, the biggest obstacle is not Porto's asking price but finding a club that genuinely appeals to Costa.

Sousa believes the Portugal international is deeply attached to both Porto and the city, meaning he would reject many transfer opportunities regardless of the financial package on offer.

Chelsea were specifically highlighted as one of the select clubs that could persuade the goalkeeper to move, alongside Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, and AC Milan.

The suggestion from Portugal is that Costa's next move must combine financial security with the opportunity to compete for the biggest trophies.

Rather than leaving simply for a higher salary, the goalkeeper is believed to be focused on joining a club capable of consistently challenging in domestic competitions and the UEFA Champions League.

That stance significantly narrows the list of realistic destinations.

Chelsea have been linked with several goalkeepers during the current transfer window as they continue evaluating their long-term options between the posts.

While there is no indication that formal talks have taken place with Porto, the Blues are viewed in Portugal as one of the few clubs capable of matching both the financial demands of the deal and Diogo Costa's sporting ambitions.
