Diego León expected to leave Man United on loan as Amorim shapes development plan

Manchester United defender Diego León is increasingly likely to leave the club on loan in January, with the teenager seeking regular senior minutes to accelerate his development. The 18-year-old arrived from Cerro Porteño in July and was viewed as a long-term project signing, but early signs suggest he may need experience elsewhere before being considered for Premier League action.

According to Paraguayan journalist Uriel Iugt, who provided a brief update on X, León “wouldn’t mind” heading out on loan during the winter window in search of consistent playing time. His comments have been echoed by Paraguayan outlet Versus, who say a temporary move is now “most likely” for the young full-back.

León has made a promising impression behind the scenes, especially under new head coach Rúben Amorim. Despite not debuting for United’s senior team, he has trained well and shown composure that has surprised staff. However, Amorim reportedly believes it is too soon to throw him into Premier League football, particularly in a squad battling for rhythm and consistency.

The left-back has so far played just four times for United’s U21s — a far cry from the senior minutes required for a physically demanding role at Old Trafford. Yet, on the international stage, Paraguay have already shown faith in him: he made his senior debut in October.

Versus report that United are open to sending León to another European club, though they remain unsure whether the destination will be inside the Premier League or elsewhere. A move within England would expose him to the physicality United want him to adapt to; a loan abroad could ensure guaranteed minutes and less pressure.
