Sunderland have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie after the highly-rated left-back reportedly made the Black Cats his preferred destination.

According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the 20-year-old wants to join RĂ©gis Le Bris' side as negotiations continue between Sunderland and Toulouse over a deal that could eventually exceed £25.7 million.

While the two clubs are yet to reach a full agreement, fresh talks are expected as Sunderland push to complete one of the biggest signings in the club's recent history.

Player gives Sunderland the green light

Sunderland are understood to have already agreed personal terms with Methalie on a five-year contract.

The latest proposal is reported to be worth more than £21.4 million, including bonuses, representing a substantial increase on the club's opening offer, which was rejected by Toulouse earlier this summer.

Tavolieri reports that Methalie believes Sunderland represents the ideal next step in his career as he prepares for his first experience of Premier League football.

The player's stance is expected to strengthen Sunderland's position as negotiations continue.

Toulouse standing firm on valuation

Despite Sunderland's improved offer, Toulouse remain determined to maximise the fee for one of their brightest academy graduates.

The Ligue 1 club's negotiating position has been strengthened following the recent sale of striker Emersonn to Ipswich Town in a deal reportedly worth around £24 million, with further performance-related bonuses.

As a result, Toulouse are now seeking an even bigger package before allowing Methalie to leave.

The defender enjoyed an outstanding breakthrough campaign last season, making 31 competitive appearances and establishing himself as one of the most promising young full-backs in French football.

Left-back remains Sunderland priority

Replacing Dennis Cirkin has been one of Sunderland's main objectives throughout the transfer window.

Reinildo is currently the club's only experienced senior left-back, making Methalie a priority target for Le Bris ahead of the new season.

Sunderland are also expected to strengthen in other areas, with a right winger, a left-sided centre-back and additional attacking depth all remaining under consideration.

However, the club continue to prioritise quality over quantity as they reshape the squad for Premier League football.

What this means

Methalie's preference for Sunderland represents a major breakthrough in negotiations, but Toulouse's firm valuation means an agreement has not yet been reached. If the clubs can bridge the remaining gap, Sunderland would secure one of Ligue 1's most exciting young defenders ahead of their Premier League return.
