David Affengruber has revealed that Alvaro Arbeloa played a major role in convincing him to join Fulham during the summer transfer window.
The Austria international completed a deadline-day move from Elche to Fulham for €12m, strengthening Arbeloa’s defensive options at Craven Cottage.
Affengruber had established himself as an important figure during two seasons with Elche, but the opportunity to work under Arbeloa helped persuade him to make the switch to the Premier League.
Arbeloa convinced Affengruber over Fulham move
Speaking to Sky Austria, Affengruber explained that his conversations with Arbeloa gave him a clear understanding of Fulham’s tactical plans and his intended role.
“I think the coach plays a big role when you do a transfer,” the centre-back said.
“For me it was maybe a little more important because I knew what the game idea is and what role I should take on.”
Affengruber added that Fulham’s overall project immediately appealed to him.
“I took this step because the conversations impressed me from the beginning and the project sounded very exciting.”
Arbeloa’s playing career also made an impression
Arbeloa’s own experience at the highest level was another important factor.
Before moving into coaching, the Spaniard played for Liverpool and Real Madrid and enjoyed enormous success with Spain, winning the 2010 World Cup and European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
He also won two Champions League titles during his time at Real Madrid.
For Affengruber, having a manager with that level of experience provides an opportunity to learn from someone who understands the demands of elite football.
“I want to develop myself, to learn every day. The coach plays an elementary role,” he said.
“Having a coach now who was such a successful player is something new to me.”
Affengruber believes Arbeloa’s experience also gives him credibility when communicating his ideas to Fulham’s squad.
“Our coach has already seen a lot in football and can pass it on to us as a team very believably.”
The comments underline just how important Arbeloa has become to Fulham’s recruitment strategy, with Affengruber convinced both by his tactical plans and his experience as a player.
