Daniel Farke defends Leeds rotation after Chelsea collapse and gives Bard injury update

Daniel Farke has defended his decision to rotate Leeds United's starting XI after they surrendered a two-goal advantage in a dramatic 6-3 Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea.

Leeds appeared firmly in control at Stamford Bridge before Chelsea's second-half response transformed the tie. Farke believes the rapid nature of the hosts' first two goals completely changed the momentum, while also confirming that Melvin Bard avoided a serious injury after being forced off.

Farke made changes with one eye on managing the workload of players who have accumulated significant minutes, while also providing opportunities to members of his squad who have featured less regularly.

"Some of our key players who have played many, many minutes should have got some rest today," Farke explained.

He added that players who had struggled for opportunities in recent weeks and months also needed a meaningful amount of game time.

For much of the contest, that approach appeared to be working.

Leeds established a two-goal advantage before Chelsea were awarded a penalty, a decision Farke admitted he did not see coming.

Only minutes later, the hosts equalised.

"There was nothing in the air to smell it," Farke said of Chelsea's sudden comeback.

Once Chelsea had restored parity, Farke responded by turning towards some of his more established players.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Noah Okafor and Anton Stach were introduced as Leeds attempted to regain control, but Chelsea's attacking quality proved increasingly difficult to contain.

The hosts ultimately scored six times after the 52nd minute to turn what had looked like a difficult evening into a convincing victory.

Farke had also planned to introduce Jean-Mattéo Bahoya as Leeds chased the game, but Bard's physical condition forced him to alter that plan.

Bard signalled during the closing stages that he could no longer continue.

The Leeds manager confirmed afterwards that the summer signing was suffering from cramp rather than a significant injury, easing concerns over his availability going forward.

Because Bahoya is not a natural left-back, Farke instead introduced Gabriel Gudmundsson to replace Bard.

That prevented Leeds from making the more aggressive attacking change Farke had originally planned.

The defeat ends Leeds' Carabao Cup run, but the absence of a serious problem for Bard represents at least one positive from a frustrating night at Stamford Bridge.

Leeds can now turn their full attention back towards the Premier League after their Carabao Cup elimination.

Farke's immediate priority will be recovering his squad and assessing Bard, although his post-match update suggests the defender's withdrawal was precautionary rather than the start of another injury concern.
