Crystal Palace have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Spanish defender Óscar Mingueza on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old is available after leaving Celta Vigo at the end of last season and had attracted interest from several clubs following speculation over a move to the Premier League.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Palace have now reached a verbal agreement with Mingueza following talks over the past 48 hours. All terms are said to have been agreed, with the deal considered done.

Crystal Palace agree Óscar Mingueza deal

Mingueza had reportedly emerged as a secret top target for Palace as new manager Pierre Sage looked to strengthen his defence.

The former Barcelona player can operate at right-back or centre-back, giving Sage greater flexibility as he prepares for his first season at Selhurst Park.

Mingueza is set to become the first signing of the new manager’s tenure following Oliver Glasner’s departure after the Conference League final victory.

Landing an experienced Spain international without paying a transfer fee could prove valuable for Palace, particularly with uncertainty surrounding several defenders.

Maxence Lacroix has attracted interest from major clubs, including Chelsea, while Palace have also been assessing their options since Marc Guehi’s departure in January.

Palace face important summer after European success

Mingueza’s expected arrival could be the start of a busy transfer window in south London.

Palace need greater squad depth ahead of a season that will include Europa League football, but keeping their most important players could be equally significant.

Jean-Philippe Mateta is expected to attract further interest after a January move failed to materialise, while Adam Wharton and Lacroix are also being monitored by other clubs.

Chairman Steve Parish has built a reputation as a difficult negotiator, and Palace will hope to avoid losing too many key players while giving Sage the additions required for another demanding campaign.

Mingueza’s versatility addresses an immediate need and gives the new manager an experienced defensive option without a transfer fee.
