Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has made it clear he would relish the chance to take penalties at Anfield after writing his name into Dutch football history on Thursday night.

The 26-year-old scored twice from the spot in the Netherlands’ 4-0 World Cup qualifier win against Malta, becoming the first player since Rob Rensenbrink in 1978 to net two penalties in a single match for the Oranje. He also added an assist in a standout display that extended the Dutch unbeaten run in Group G.

Gakpo’s message was aimed at new Liverpool manager Arne Slot, with the forward suggesting his penalty record speaks for itself. With Luis Díaz’s departure to Bayern Munich opening up the left flank at Anfield, Gakpo has grown in importance this season — but his comments show he wants to add penalty duties to his responsibilities.

Gakpo: “At Liverpool I’m never allowed to take them”

“At Liverpool, I’m never allowed to take them. But normally, I’m pretty good at it. I’ve only missed a penalty once. That was for PSV against FC Copenhagen.” — Cody Gakpo, via Algemeen Dagblad

He explained that with Memphis Depay absent, the responsibility against Malta fell to him and Wout Weghorst: “There wasn’t really a clear agreement… it was up to me. Thankfully, it worked out.”

Salah still first-choice, but questions remain

Mohamed Salah remains Liverpool’s undisputed penalty taker and scored a decisive spot-kick against Burnley earlier this season. However, the Egyptian has also missed eight penalties during his time at Anfield, including in the Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace and a pre-season friendly against Roma.

Statistically, Gakpo has a stronger conversion rate — 88% compared to Salah’s 83% — though the Dutchman has taken far fewer.

Player Penalties Scored Penalties Missed Conversion Rate
Mohamed Salah 54 11 83%
Cody Gakpo 8 1 88%

While Salah has missed on occasion, his reputation for delivering under pressure means he is unlikely to be displaced. Yet Slot may look to Gakpo as a backup option when Salah is not on the pitch.

Analyst Verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William says Gakpo’s comments reveal growing confidence:

“Gakpo has stepped into a bigger role at Liverpool since Díaz left. By openly staking a claim for penalties, he’s showing leadership and belief in his ability. Slot may not take duties away from Salah, but knowing Gakpo is a reliable option adds depth in high-pressure situations.”

Key Insights

  • Gakpo became the first Dutch player since 1978 to score two penalties in a game.
  • He has scored 8 of 9 career spot-kicks, an 88% conversion rate.
  • Salah remains Liverpool’s main penalty taker with 54 scored, 11 missed.
  • Gakpo has hinted he wants more responsibility at Anfield.
  • Slot may see him as a secondary option in shootouts or when Salah is absent.

What’s Next for Gakpo and Liverpool?

Liverpool continue their Premier League campaign this weekend, with Gakpo expected to retain his place on the left flank. His improved form and confidence could be vital as Slot looks to keep pace in the title race.

In the longer term, Gakpo’s penalty-taking ability might be tested in cup competitions, where Liverpool have already lost shootouts under Slot. If given the chance, the Dutch forward could become a reliable alternative from 12 yards.

👉 Should Arne Slot consider giving Cody Gakpo more penalty duties at Liverpool, or does Mohamed Salah remain untouchable from the spot?
