Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet believes the club have adjusted their recruitment strategy to meet supporters' expectations for immediate success.

Chelsea initially concentrated on signing younger players to long-term contracts following the 2022 takeover.

However, the summer arrivals of Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck suggest experience has become a greater priority under manager Xabi Alonso.

Poyet sees change in Chelsea recruitment

Speaking to Standard Sport, Poyet suggested Chelsea's owners have recognised the importance of balancing long-term development with immediate results.

He highlighted the signing of Henderson, 36, as a deal the club would have been unlikely to consider during the early years of its current ownership.

Welbeck, 35, also arrived during the summer, adding Premier League experience to a squad previously dominated by younger players.

Poyet believes the combination has created a more balanced group, although he identified consistency as an area Chelsea must continue improving.

Chelsea continue investing in younger talent

The change in approach has not prevented Chelsea from spending heavily on emerging players.

The club signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a reported £117million in July, breaking their transfer record.

That followed earlier major investments in Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández, who subsequently joined Manchester City for £125m in September.

Chelsea also announced an ownership transition in September, with Clearlake Capital agreeing to acquire Todd Boehly's and Mark Walter's interests.

The club said the transaction would not change its existing strategy.
