Chelsea are facing key late fitness decisions ahead of tonight’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Arsenal, with Liam Rosenior set to make final calls on several senior players.
The Blues host the Gunners at Stamford Bridge knowing squad availability could significantly shape the tie, with three starters managed carefully over the weekend.
Late decision on Palmer, James and Gusto
Chelsea head coach Rosenior confirmed that Cole Palmer, Reece James and Malo Gusto will all be assessed before a decision is taken on their involvement.
The trio were rested for Saturday’s emphatic 5–1 FA Cup third-round win over Charlton Athletic as a precaution, having picked up minor knocks during last week’s league fixture against Fulham.
Rosenior explained that the decision was a calculated one rather than forced by serious injury concerns. He confirmed there were no new problems following the Charlton match and stressed that player management would dictate selection.
Caicedo suspended, Cucurella returns
Chelsea will be without Moises Caicedo, who is suspended after picking up a second yellow card in the competition during December’s quarter-final win at Cardiff. The Ecuador international was also sent off in the most recent meeting between Chelsea and Arsenal and will now serve his third suspension of the season.
There is better news at left-back, with Marc Cucurella available again after completing a one-match ban.
Attacking choices remain fluid
Rosenior also faces a selection dilemma on the left flank. Both Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens started against Charlton, though Pedro Neto is another option if Rosenior opts for fresh legs in a high-intensity semi-final.
With the second leg still to come, balance and risk management are expected to influence Chelsea’s approach.
