Chelsea Jackson red card 2025 controversy erupted as Enzo Maresca’s side suffered a damaging 2-0 loss to Newcastle United. With Champions League qualification on the line, Chelsea’s hopes took a massive blow after striker Nicolas Jackson was sent off following a VAR review for a forearm to Sven Botman. Referee John Brooks initially issued a yellow, but after being urged to consult the monitor, upgraded it to a straight red — leaving Chelsea a man down and without Jackson for the rest of the season. The decision sparked strong words from both Maresca and Marc Cucurella post-match.

Maresca Questions VAR and Atmosphere Influence

Maresca suggested the charged environment at St James’ Park may have contributed to the referee’s change of heart.

“Sometimes in this stadium, you have the feeling that some decisions are from the noise. If the referee decides it’s a red card, it’s a red card.” — Enzo Maresca

The Chelsea boss admitted disappointment but insisted his players must move on and refocus on Friday’s key fixture against Manchester United.

Cucurella: ‘Big Mistake’ by Jackson

Speaking after the match, left-back Marc Cucurella didn’t hold back when assessing the situation.

“Now we lose Nico for the next games. It’s a big mistake, but the good thing is we have other players ready.” — Marc Cucurella

Cucurella revealed that Jackson was upset but accepted the consequences of his action.

  • Red Card Fallout: Jackson banned for Chelsea’s final two matches.
  • Maresca Frustrated: Claims referee was influenced by the crowd noise.
  • Crucial Run-In: Chelsea must beat Man Utd and Forest to stay in Champions League contention.

What’s Next?

Chelsea face Manchester United on Friday in a must-win clash for their top-five hopes. Without Nicolas Jackson, Maresca will have to reshuffle his attack — with pressure mounting to finish strong and prove Chelsea belong in Europe’s elite.
